The welfare and development of pupils is important to Howick High School and guidance is provided for pupils in a number of ways:

Guidance and Career Counselling

Our School Counsellor is available to assist pupils with career guidance, study skills, personal development and social challenges. In 2014, our first Career Expo was held and was attended by all pupils from Grade 8 to 12.  The objective of the expo is to expose our pupils to the various study and career options to enable them to make informed choices about their future subject and study choices.

Leadership Development

The development of leadership skills is offered to our pupils in various areas including the Representative Council of Learners (RCL), the Prefect Body, Team/Club/House Captains and leadership training courses.  

The RCL is chaired by our Principal and the Head Prefects and is made up of a representative from each registration class.  Meetings are held once a term and give students the opportunity to affect change and report both positive and negative matters within the school.

The Prefect Body is made up of 18 Grade 12 pupils, elected by the student body and staff, to perform duties which assist the school in maintaining a positive ethos and culture by way of leadership and example.   

All grade 11 pupils are offered the opportunity to attend leadership training during the course of the year.

Mentorship Program

The mentorship program is overseen by senior members of staff and coordinated by a committee of matric pupils.  Senior pupils are teamed with one or two Grade 8 pupils to whom they give guidance and assistance in navigating their first year at High School.

Academic Enhancement Program

To assist pupils who find mathematics challenging, additional maths classes are compulsory as a sixth lesson once a week for Grade 11 and 12 pupils.

Remedial assistance is provided, where necessary, to improve pupils’ reading skills.
