NEWSLETTER 1 / 2010 - Monday, January 18, 2010 at 00:00

15TH January 2010

Dear Parents

NEWSLETTER 1 / 2010

On behalf of all of us at Howick High School, I would like to welcome you and wish you everything of the best for 2010.  If you are joining us for the first time, an especially warm welcome to you!

Our 2009 matric results were generally as expected,  with one failure, one incomplete result (owing to illness) and 82 passes.  There were 89 subject distinctions and 90% of the pupils obtained a Bachelor’s Pass which allows entry into Universities.  Deanne Roodt (our Dux) received 5 As.

We welcome four new members of staff to our teaching team this year:

*           Mr Jeremy Exelby (Mathematics)

*           Mrs Nicky Gordon (Senior English and Junior Afrikaans)

*           Mr Mark Houston (Maths, English and Life Orientation)

*           Mr James Delport (Geography and Life Orientation)

We hope their stay with us will be a good one.

The first half-year promises to be a particularly busy one, with Grade 8 classes going on class excursions, a Grade 11 and 12 Geography / History trip is planned, we have a cultural tour to Sweden and London, a Netball tour to Sportweni, Rugby to Felixton, and a Hockey tour to Treverton.  The cultural highlights will be a musical (Fiddler on the Roof) on 10th, 11th and 12th March, followed by Richard Cock and his Orchestra here in the Hall on Sunday 14th and Monday 15th March.

The school would like again to thank the executive of the ‘Rampant Lions’ club (Past Pupils’ Association) for their ongoing commitment to their high school.   Over the holidays, new cricket side screens were raised to replace the rather tatty existing side screens.  Alan Adams of ‘Midlands Steel and Wire’ spent a couple of days supervising the installation of the side screens.  It seems that cricket is onto a good wicket for 2010:  the 1st cricket team started their season with a week of cricket at the annual Alex Cricket week, held on the 5th - 8th January 2010.  (A full report is attached)

                                                           Alex Cricket Week 2010

The 2010 Howick High sporting year got off to a resoundingly successful start with our 1st team cricketers attending the Alex Cricket week.  The team won all four of their matches in convincing fashion.

Playing against Hudson Park from East London, Howick batted first scoring 206 all out in 48 overs.  (Ryan Stanbury 50, Gareth Gardner 30 and Damien Leipert 26).  With some tight and accurate bowling, Howick managed to bowl Hudson Park out for 120 runs.  Gary Hodgkinson 5 for 33.   Howick won by 86 runs.

The next game was against Cumberwood.  Howick batted first, scoring a massive 345 runs for the loss of 5 wickets.  (Ryan Stanbury 131, Bryan Kunst 86, Cody Mortimer 48 and Grant Bowles 32.)   Cumberwood went in to bat and only managed to score 90 runs.  Ryan Stanbury 4 wickets for 7 and Gary Hodgkinson 4 for 14 .   Howick won by 255 runs.

On the third day we played against Alex who batted first and offered very little resistance to some fantastic bowling by Gary Hodgkinson (6 for 25 runs) and Bruce Hayworth (3 for 16 runs).   Our opening batsmen Bryan Kunst and Brendin Scholtz had no trouble in reaching the required runs without loss.   Howick won by 10 wickets.

In the last game which was against Carter High, we batted first reaching a respectable total of 242 runs in 50 overs, for the loss of 7 wickets.  An awesome and sensible knock of 116 runs by Bryan Kunst laid the foundation for the innings.  (Bryan Kunst 116 runs and Ryan Stanbury 40 runs).   Carter batted after lunch and managed to score 202 runs all out in 46 overs.  Howick won by 40 runs.

Tomorrow, Saturday 16th January, we play Glenwood, and look forward to a good match!
